Find a quiet, controlled space
- Find a private space where you won’t be interrupted.
- Carpeted floors and furniture help reduce echo.
Consider recording from home. A bedroom closet works well — the racks of clothing absorb ambient sound!
Eliminate background noise
You might not even notice some of the ambient noise that is picked up by your microphone. Common culprits include:
- Air conditioner
- The hum of your computer fan
- Clock
- Street/office noise
Move your microphone out of the line of fire
A microphone placed right in front of your mouth will amplify the “pop” of every “p” and “t” sound you make.
- First try positioning the microphone about 3 inches from your mouth.
- Put the mic at an angle, out of the path of air coming from the mouth and nose.
- Experiment until you find the right spot — it might be above your nose or under your chin.
Be larger than life
- Your normal speaking voice will lose some of its clarity in a voice-over.
- Speak a little more loudly than you would in a regular conversation. Do a test recording and play it back to see if you are at the optimum volume.
- Try to speak more slowly, especially if you are a “fast talker.”
- Emphasize important words.
- Stand up to improve breathing, freedom of movement.
- Have fun! Smile and get excited about what you’re talking about. It may feel funny to you at first, but it will sound natural and more clear to your listeners.
Record more than one take
Play back your recording and make adjustments. Ask someone else to listen to it, as well, and get their feedback.
- Is your voice distinct above any background noise?
- Do you sound lively and engaging?
- Are there any problem words or phrases that run together? You might consider rewording it for clarity.
